Virtualization platform from Wind River achieves FACE conformance

ALAMEDA, Calif. Wind River announced that its Wind River Helix Virtualization Platform has achieved conformance to the latest Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) Technical Standard, Edition 3.0, a designation that establishes Helix Platform as an operating system segment (OSS) that supports the Safety Base and Security Profile.
Wind River made the announcement at the FACE and SOSA [Sensor Open System Architecture] Expo and Technical Interchange Meeting, being held this week in Dayton, Ohio.
The Helix Platform -- based on the VxWorks 653 technology foundation, which is also FACE-conformant -- is an adaptive software development environment for aerospace systems that enables support for multiple applications. It supports robust partitioning, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), and RTCA DO-297 Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) considerations.
It encompasses POSIX and ARINC 653 support, including ARINC 653 Part 1 Supplement 4 and Supplement 5, with available commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) RTCA DO-178C DAL A certification evidence. The real-time, embedded, Type 1 hypervisor runs on Armor x86 multicore processors.
Conformance with the FACE Technical Standard means that Helix can be used and reused, say company officials, by suppliers and integrators of avionics systems across different global defense programs and aircraft, help users and military services lower their procurement costs, avoid and prevent supplier lock-in, and enables manufacturers to easily and rapidly integrate ARINC 653 and POSIX applications software with other FACE-portable software components.
Wind River worked with its FACE verification authority, TES-SAVI, to get through and document the rigorous FACE certification conformance testing for Helix Platform.
