Boeing, FedEx Express team to test technologically updated freight plane

SEATTLE. Boeing and FedEx Express -- a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. -- are slated to work together to fly the next ecoDemonstrator aircraft; the ecoDemonstrator program serves as a series of flying testbeds designed to improve the environmental performance and safety of future airplanes.
Beginning in 2018, a new Boeing 777 freighter -- made especially for FedEx Express -- will test emerging flight technologies such as advancements in propulsion and flight-deck innovations.
This round of ecoDemonstrator testing -- the fifth iteration in the testing series -- includes installation of a compact thrust reverser developed by Boeing designed to save fuel, flight-deck improvements that can streamline operations in and out of busy airports, and testing of prototype airplane parts using advanced manufacturing techniques that reduce material waste. Flight testing is scheduled to last approximately three months before the airplane is returned to the FedEx fleet.
