EVERETT, Wash. U.S. Air Force and Boeing Defense, Space & Security personnel finished the KC-46 tanker test program's first flight over Washington state this month. The plane, a Boeing 767-2C, will get its military systems after certification.
Boeing experts are building four test aircraft as part the Air Force contract that was won in 2011. The four aircraft to be built consist of two 767-2Cs and two KC-46A tankers. The 767-2Cs will enter flight test as commercial freighters before receiving their aerial refueling systems, while the KC-46s will operate as fully equipped tankers via the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and military safety certification process.
Boeing is contracted to deliver the first 18 of 179 KC-46 aircraft to the Air Force by 2017.
